The Green Grocery
Owner: Skye Connelly
Location: Battle, East Sussex
Enterprises/Activities: Handmade, high quality, certified-organic and vegan beauty products, created with sustainability in mind.
The Green Grocery was launched in 2009 by founder Skye Connelly. Her ambition was to create a beauty range that was not only organic, but also environmentally considerate.
Skye said: “I truly believe that modern business has a responsibility to care about the natural environment, and from manufacture through to end product I wanted to ensure The Green Grocery could honour that approach.”
Having gained a BA degree in Environment and Development at Sussex University, Skye combined this knowledege with her previous career, working in cosmetics with Max factor and Ralph Lauren.
Based in Battle, East Sussex, The Green Grocery is now seeing year-on-year growth, is earning well-deserved recogition in the organic bodycare world and has scooped a string of prestigious awards for the quality of its products.
The product range started with body basics, but now includes a perfume line and a new Spa range called ‘Chakrosanct’, created with Kirsty Taylor of Uniquely Organic EcoSpa, which launched this summer. A new skincare line is also scheduled to launch in October 2011.
Traditional production methods are at the heart of The Green Grocery’s ethos. All of the products are made by hand; hand poured, hand stirred and individually tested and checked for quality.
From the outset, Skye has tapped into hundreds of years of research and knowledge into the use of oils, essential oils and infusions on the body, allowing the production of a bodycare range that has no chemicals added and which relies on high quality ingredients from trusted suppliers and complete traceability of those ingredients back through the supply chain.
The attention to detail extends throughout the production process, which is designed to minimise on resource use, keeping energy consumption, water use and waste to the lowest level possible.
Packaging is also kept to an absolute minimum and all of it is made from recyclable materials, such as tin and aluminium containers, with cardboard outer packaging where necessary. Labels are made from paper, not plastic, and the inks used are chosen because they are environmentally considerate.
The Green Grocery focuses on supplying its range to independent retailers and wholesalers, as a small business keen to support others like it.
