Contemplating Conversion
A national one-day event looking at organic arable crop production and the market
June 26, 2008, Great Berwick Farm, Shrewsbury, Shropshire
With organic crops in massively short supply, Organic Farmers & Growers (OF&G), is to hold a national one-day event in a bid to enlighten farmers on the benefits of converting to organic.
The lack of home-grown product is causing many problems, such as a lack of feedstuffs and the resulting high prices caused by the shortage. This is obviously a concern as well as an opportunity and OF&G is keen to open non-organic farmers’ eyes to the potential for premium prices.
The event, titled Contemplating Conversion, will look at the practicalities of conversion to organic arable crop production and the market for those crops. It will also include some elements considering livestock (for mixed systems), horticulture and milling.
An array of relevant expert speakers from the industry is being lined-up and there is expected to be a significant presence from buyers, processors, experienced organic arable farmers, millers and others from the sector to advise and share their knowledge.
OF&G is working with Abacus Organic Associates on the event and supporting organisations currently include: the HGCA, Savills, Triodos Bank, Greenvale AP, Natural England; Norton Organic Grain.
Confirmed speakers so far include: Andrew Charlton, Farmers Weekly columnist and organic arable farmer; Stephen Briggs of Abacus Organic Associates; Dr Debbie Sparkes, Assistant Professor in Agronomy at the University of Nottingham; Keith Preston, Agro-Business Advisor at Savills; Nigel Gossett, of Norton Organic Grain; Matt Heaton, Natural England.
An organic lunch will be provided, as well as refreshments throughout the day. The venue is Great Berwick Farm, Berwick, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Tickets are free, with an organic lunch available for a subsidised cost of £5, but should be booked in advance.
