Welsh Farm Organics

Enterprises/Activities: We operate a processing service for local organic farmers. We can also pack, weigh and label their products enabling them to sell on, despite the small size of their operation. In addition we sell our produce at farmers' markets, to restaurants, to a couple of box schemes, to a specialist food supplier who market non-additive, non-coloured, non-nitrate products for the increasing number of people who need a specialised diet.
History: The business was formed by a young Montgomeryshire farming couple Jonathan and Sally Rees who wanted to sell quality Welsh organic meat at an affordable price, but without the middle man.
In 2001 the couple's family farm achieved organic status for their cattle and sheep, and seeing a gap in the market for reasonably priced organic meat they decided to set up their own meat processing business at Tyn y Fron Farm at Mochdre near Newtown.
Jonathan trained with a local butcher, and an on-farm processing unit was built comprising a number of separate chill rooms, cutting and preparation areas, freezers, offices and storage facilities. They now offer a professional, high grade, butchering and processing service to local farmers. Inspiration for the venture came from his travels through the Young Farmers Clubs movement to Australia and Kenya where many farms take marketing into their own hands.
In a relatively short space of time they found themselves supplying a host of top restaurants across England and Wales, and more recently started supplying Welshpool High School with organic meat and their own Mochdre range of organic sausages, which were chosen by the pupils themselves in a blind tasting.
Welsh Farm Organics' latest product is Maldwyn Cure, an organic air dried Welsh beef which has been compared to the classic Italian delicacy, Bresaola.
