The Welfare Compendium
For information about animal diseases, prevention through husbandry and veterinary treatments, the Reading University ‘Compendium of animal Health and Welfare in Organic Farming’ is recommended and can be accessed on the Reading University web site below.
This compendium has been produced by members of staff of the organic livestock research group (OLRG) at the veterinary, epidemiology and economic research unit (VEERU), Department of Agriculture, University of Reading. The production of the Compendium was funded by DEFRA.
The aim of the compendium is to serve as a resource material and training tool for advisors, inspectors, veterinarians, organic sector bodies and policy makers on issues related to general and specific animal health and welfare aspects of organic livestock production.
The compendium covers four livestock species: cattle (dairy and beef), sheep, pigs and poultry (chickens; table birds and layers). Main disease conditions in each species are approached from a preventive veterinary medicine point, and recommendations for the control and treatment of each condition are made for both conversion period and beyond.
The Compendium is published both in CD ROM format and on the internet at
