Cut Flower Production – Planning
This one-day course focusses on the main aspects of planning a cut flower production enterprise. We will look at planning the cultivation of your flowers, and in the afternoon we will work on a healthy business plan for your enterprise.
This course is recommended for everybody who is seriously contemplating starting their own small scale flower production enterprise; and for those already in the business keen to improve their returns.
9.30 – 10.45: Cultivation planning 1
11.15 – 12.30: Cultivation planning 2
1.30 – 3.00: Labour planning
3.30 – 5.00: Business planning
Cultivation planning: Using Excel, we will create a cultivation plan so that you have a continuous supply of a wide range of flowers all through the season. Please bring your own laptop with Microsoft Excel software.
Labour planning: How much can you realistically achieve on your own? When do you need help? How much does that cost? How can you save labour by being work efficient and by using (which) tools and machines?
Business planning: We will look at the essential investments and the annual expenses which you incur when you run your own cut flower cultivation enterprise. We will also try to estimate revenues and create a healthy budget so that all your hard work will generate a profit!
The course is led by Arjen Huese, owner and grower of Wealden Flowers, a 6-acre organic cut flower farm in Sussex. Arjen is also the course leader of the Biodynamic Organic Horticulture Training at the Biodynamic Agricultural College.
